Saturday Farmers Market & Peace Tree Brews &Muse MENU POST!

Taco Lovers,

We have a big weekend ahead! Many opportunities for tacos up in this piece! Here are the menus for this Saturday’s taco flavors:

Lots of fun stuff there!

Taco Pastorius

Taco Lovers. Lunch begins again at 11 am tomorrow (Friday) and features our usual taco numbers, fresh Thai shrimp ceviche, our signature Market Gaspacho made from fresh farmers market produce, and our recently added Tacopocalypse Taco Salad of Utter Enjoyment.

Yes, we serve a bomb taco salad during Friday Lunch…some would say it is a lunch special.

We start with a fresh fried tortilla shell, our spicy refried pintos (beans, not the car), then we add fresh field greens lightly tossed in a blackberry-balsamic vinaigrette, and top it with fresh grape tomatoes, bell pepper, red onion, cotija cheese, and your choice of Chicken, Braised Pork, or Carne Asada. Is good.

So there is that, bring your crew in for lunch tomorrow and show them how much taco cred you have. 8410 Hickman inside Bombay Bicycle Club.

The Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market is one of the largest in the nation, and being included last year was quite a treat (among many other things) “it was the best of times, it was also the almost best of times.” The process of applying and waiting for approval for this year’s market is finally over and TACOPOCALYPSE will be back for another 26 weeks of Saturday Morning Funtimes starting May 5th!  Back with the Breakfast Things and all the tacos you have grown to expect along with some new additions like Poblano/Potato tacos and a few other more breakfast related ingredients.  It’s going to be a blast, and we are still on the same corner (although a few feet away from where we were last year).

It's time to get ready for this!

Tacopocalypse/Aj’s Sunday Funday Brunchpocalypse Menu!

Taco and Brunch lovers, prepare for this Sunday when your two favorite things are driven full force at each other in a crazy game of “Chicken” resulting in a wicked crashing together of terms which will end up forming into ONE TERM which will be standing on the side of the road thumbing for a ride into your bellies.  BRUNCHPOCALYPSE is upon us….er…you?

(Translation: we are serving brunch this coming Sunday at AJ’s On East Court at E 4th and Court Avenue.  Aj’s has been kind enough to host a brunch event so that you, the taco and Sunday funday lovers out there enjoy both.  This is our first brunch, and if you all like it this time, it will most likely become a regular event.  You dig?)

The beer cooler at AJ's, they serve 80+ flavors of beer, including the Chef's Choice, PBR Talls.

I have been meaning to get a menu posted for this weekend, but have been running into snag after snag.  Today is no different.  We had a little incident of Van-dalism which has caused a few problems today, but here is the basic “gist” of what will be served up on Sunday:

AJ’s will be serving up killer Bloody Mary and Mimosas (I have heard that they are going to be XXL) and have a $1.50 domestic bottle special that is going all day.  That means during brunch also.

Tacopocalypse tacos served on hand-made corn tortillas and topped with our signature slaw flavors include:

  • Braised Pork – our take on the classic carnitas.  We have been told it is “waaaaay better” than carnitas.
  • Vegan Chorizo – Tacopocalypse Vegan Chorizo is very traditional-tasting blend of soy, spices, and vegetables.  But “waaaay better”
  • Wasabi Brisket – I had some other ideas, but the WB is so popular that I was practically threatened into serving it at brunch.
  • Spiced Tofu Scramble – Get your tofu scramble from the guy who was the first to put tofu scramble on Des Moines menus.  Still the best.
  • Bacon Chorizo – It’s a morning thing, so we were like “duh, bacon chorizo”  I know, good description.  Chorizo made from only bacon.
  • Korean Chicken – with spicy mayo and kimchi….um…yummm.
  • Potato and Pepper – cumin dusted roast potatoes with peppers and onions….maybe even get some egg up on there…

AND WE WILL BE SERVING THE BREAKFAST THING!  Two corn tortillas sandwiched around melted Chihuahua cheese topped with eggs, more cheese, your choice of taco toppings, and slaw!  I was once told by a person after trying their first BREAKFAST THING “why didn’t you make me eat one of these before?  Dammit!” and hit me on the arm.  I guess that means it is good. er.

We have also promised a few new items, but we are going to be leaving that for a Saturday announcement.  The details have not been worked out quite yet due to…things.  (like fixing slashed tires)

Taco/Cross Saturday Tomorrow!

Taco Lovers,  Tomorrow we will be joining forces with Zealous Racing at the Iowa State Cyclocross Championships being held at Lions Park in Altoona, Iowa (13th Ave and 4th St. SW).  You will have the chance to see some of the best of the best Cyclocross racers and eat the best tacos the state of Iowa has to offer.

We will be on site serving tacos starting between 9:30-10:00 am, and the first race starts at 11.  Wait?  Some of you out there don’t know anything about cyclocross?  Here is a quick video to show you what happens at these exciting events:

Eating tacos:

Okay, it isn’t going to be brutally muddy at the race tomorrow, but you get the idea.

What is on the menu?  We will have Vegan Chorizo, Bacon Chorizo, Braised Pork, and Wasabi Brisket!  We will also be serving the BREAKFAST THING, that killer of burritos and slayer of morning/afternoon/whenever-you-happen-to-eat-yours hunger.  We will have along our legendary Slaw, our Red and Green salsas, and the other fresh veggie acoutremandes you have become accustom to, all served on our hand pressed fresh corn tortillas. Also of note, all of our selections are Gluten Free.

We will see you tomorrow at Lions Park in Altoona!  Serving until 2 or later…

Something Wasabi This Way Comes

Taco Likers, even though there are only two more DTFM’s left in the season, we are still hard at work on new items.  It’s not as if the Tacopocalypse will completely stop rolling after the end of this month, but the bulk of our new face sighting comes during the Market and we try to keep things as fresh and new as possible for the tens of thousands that roll through on a weekly basis.  Or something like that.

Our Fall Brisket taco has been quite a hit the last two weeks, but something different popped from taste buds to brain the other day when dining at a local establishment.  WHY HAVEN’T OUR TACOS FEATURED SOME KIND OF WASABI PASTE THING?  After spending some time as a sushi person, wasabi lost a little of its lustre, but it is time to bring it back.  This week we have a new taco, a Gingered Brisket with Wasabi Crema and Pickled Daikon.  We have tried a few, and you should be warned that this new taco is pretty addictive.  But what else do we have for tomorrow?  Here it is:

Next-To-Last DTFM Menu

  • Braised Pork

  • Vegan Chorizo

  • Korean Chicken w/Kimchee

  • Bacon Chorizo

  • Gingered Brisket w/Wasabi Crema and Pickled Daikon

  • Tofu Scramble

We will also have on hand some cumin spiced Breakfast Potatoes that can be added to your Breakfast Thing for a small upcharge.  These were a big hit at last week’s Des Moines Marathon, and we are sorry that we have been so anti-tater up until this point.  If our friend Jarad is lucky, we may even fry up some peppers for the potatoes.

We will see you tomorrow, and remember to dress warm.  It’s going to start off a little chilly, but we have the food goods to warm you up. (and the first people to dine with us at the market will be treated to complimentary coffee this week.  Offer good until the coffee is gone! This coffee deal is out of our appreciation for those of you who rise early and brave the cold with us to share in some taco goodness, and also to justify Chef Sam’s purchase of what was going to end up being his own personal air pot.)

Downtown Farmers Market Tacopocalypse Begins Saturday!

The time has finally come.  We have all been waiting for weeks for the opportunity to bring the Tacopocalypse experience to the Fair City of Des Moines proper, and the daily countdown has dwindled to single digits.  This Saturday the Tacopocalypse begins at 6am at the intersection of 2nd and Court Avenue along side the masterful produce producer and Niman Ranch distributor Cleverly Farms.  We stress that you should get your taco loving behinds down to the market early, even though we have a fairly large amount of food, this IS our first foray into the mad, mad realm of serving potentially thousands of people.

What is the Menu?  I thought you would never ask.  For opening day the menu will be kept fairly simple.

  • Classic Braised Pork with Curtido.  Pork shoulder from Niman Ranch braised with peppers and herbs until it makes you go almost as tender as the pork in the knees.  Pork knees.
  • Vegan Chorizo with Curtido.  Organic, delicious, and made with veggies, TVP, and our proprietary Chorizo Spice Blend, our Vegan Chorizo is almost indistinguishable from its meaty cousin, regular old chorizo.  It has drawn many into its cruelty-free web.
  • BACON CHORIZO with Curtido.  Yes, this is Chorizo made with ground Niman Ranch Bacon.  It is out of control.

What is Curtido?  Another great question.  It is the traditional Salvadoran Slaw served with Papusas (which btw, there are some great papusas at the market and we won’t be offended it you are spotted eating some) made with cabbage, onion, carrot, oregano, vinegar, and some other stuff.  Why do we put it on everything?   Because the Slaw Is The Law.

Of course there will be the normal selection of Cilantro, Onions, and hot sauces.  Also included is the now-barely-famous Tacopocalypse Redfire Sauce and Tomatillo-Habanero Salsa.

All of this is served on hand-pressed corn tortillas which are personally hand pressed with the hands of our reigning champion tortilla presser, Chef Samuel Auen.  All tacos are also GLUTEN FREE AND TOTALLY LEGIT.  YOU WILL MOST LIKELY NOT GET BETTER TACOS ANYWHERE.  DEFINITELY NOT AT THE WONDERFUL SUNNY DOWNTOWN FARMERS MARKET ON SATURDAY MORNINGS!

See you there.
