It’s A Farmer’s Market Menu-athalon

The HyVee Triathalon is happening this weekend, on Sunday to be exact.  We are celebrating by doing this whole taco thing this week in the name of running, swimming, and (mostly) biking. I have a good personal friend, world famous Ironman Triathlete Kale Halder, who swears by our tacos for his training and recovery meals while on the pain train (aka training for Ironman and/or road racing).  If Kale Halder performs better with the help of Tacopocalypse, so can you…or you could be an even better spectator!

This guy trains with Tacopocalypse. Fact.

(Kale Halder’s image, name, and skewed quote used completely without permission, but Kale, ir you see this, I will hook you up with a few free tacos…yeah?)

Downtown Mini Market Tomorrow!

Taco Lovers, Produce Lovers, all people who love the combination of Cleverley Farms and Tacopocalypse!  Tomorrow is a great day for you all!  Larry Cleverley and I will be hosting a ‘Mini-Market” pop-up thing in front of the Royal Mile on historic 4th street in Downtown Des Moines from 10 am to 2 pm Saturday.  You can get some great produce straight from your favorite farmer’s hands and the Tacopocalypse goodness you have grown to love (tacos AND Breakfast Things, AND our new Market Potatoes!), which will also include some of Larry’s amazing produce.  It’s going to be a real Champagne Jam!

Obligatory David Lee Roth Pic Means Business. Party Business.

Also, those of you who were wondering if we were still participating due to our exclusion from the wonderful Des Moines Register’s announcement.  We are definitely in, even though the Curmudgeon Formerly Known As The Datebook Diner chose to “overlook” us.

So…Join Tacopocalypse and Cleverley Farms for some wild Saturday fun.  10-2, 4th Street. DSM

Taco Pastorius.

Saturday Mini Market This Week!

This coming Saturday, April 14th, we will once again be joining forces with our good friends Cleverley Farms to bring you a dose of the fresh produce and tacos team-up that you all grew to love last year (our first year together, you have been liking Cleverley Farms for much much longer) at the Downtown Farmers Market!  Join us in front of the Royal Mile on 4th Street in downtown Des Moines from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday and get your taco and Breakfast Thing fix, and buy some amazing produce directly from the man who grows it all. Menu details to follow…

Taco Pastorius

WE ARE OFFICIALLY IN THE FARMERS MARKET!

The Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market is one of the largest in the nation, and being included last year was quite a treat (among many other things) “it was the best of times, it was also the almost best of times.” The process of applying and waiting for approval for this year’s market is finally over and TACOPOCALYPSE will be back for another 26 weeks of Saturday Morning Funtimes starting May 5th!  Back with the Breakfast Things and all the tacos you have grown to expect along with some new additions like Poblano/Potato tacos and a few other more breakfast related ingredients.  It’s going to be a blast, and we are still on the same corner (although a few feet away from where we were last year).

It's time to get ready for this!

ARE YOU READY FOR THE MADNESS?  ARE YOU READY TO PUT DOWN THE BURRITOS AND PAPUSAS LONG ENOUGH TO GET WITH THE TACOPOCALYPSE PROGRAM?  BECAUSE IF YOU HAVEN’T THEN YOU ARE MISSING OUT/IN THE DARK/JUST PLAIN WRONG!  GET RIGHT WITH TACOS!

CAPS-LOCKEDLY YOURS,

TACO PASTORIUS!

Updated: Tacopocalypse Guy and Cleverley Farms Radio Weekend Thing!

Dearest Taco Lovers:

I will be joining Larry Cleverley of Cleverley Farms on Chef George Formaro’s radio show “Kitchen Insider” this week.  If there are any subjects you would like us to talk about, drop us a line.  Program tapes Friday afternoon and airs at 10 am Saturday morning on 99.1 KFMG or you can stream from HERE.

Those of you familiar with Chef Formaro’s show are aware of the shenanigans which transpire, and now with the added voice of our good friend (and DTFM partner) from Cleverley Farm, you are assured a very entertaining and informative hour of talk about the local dining scene, local foods, and most likely tacos…or maybe pizza.  Tune in or Stream this Saturday morning.

Just When You Thought It Was Safe…Tacopocalypse Saturday!

This coming Saturday, November 12, the Tacopocalypse shall descend upon the downtown area for one last Hurrah…we will be set up in front of the Royal Mile (thank you so much to the people at Full Court Press for allowing us the use of their property) with Cleverley Farms to subject you to the same double team of Amazing Produce and Tacos you became so comfortable with during the Farmers Market season.  We will be serving from 10 am to 1 pm.  Stay tuned for more details/menu announcement.

Something Wasabi This Way Comes

Taco Likers, even though there are only two more DTFM’s left in the season, we are still hard at work on new items.  It’s not as if the Tacopocalypse will completely stop rolling after the end of this month, but the bulk of our new face sighting comes during the Market and we try to keep things as fresh and new as possible for the tens of thousands that roll through on a weekly basis.  Or something like that.

Our Fall Brisket taco has been quite a hit the last two weeks, but something different popped from taste buds to brain the other day when dining at a local establishment.  WHY HAVEN’T OUR TACOS FEATURED SOME KIND OF WASABI PASTE THING?  After spending some time as a sushi person, wasabi lost a little of its lustre, but it is time to bring it back.  This week we have a new taco, a Gingered Brisket with Wasabi Crema and Pickled Daikon.  We have tried a few, and you should be warned that this new taco is pretty addictive.  But what else do we have for tomorrow?  Here it is:

Next-To-Last DTFM Menu

  • Braised Pork

  • Vegan Chorizo

  • Korean Chicken w/Kimchee

  • Bacon Chorizo

  • Gingered Brisket w/Wasabi Crema and Pickled Daikon

  • Tofu Scramble

We will also have on hand some cumin spiced Breakfast Potatoes that can be added to your Breakfast Thing for a small upcharge.  These were a big hit at last week’s Des Moines Marathon, and we are sorry that we have been so anti-tater up until this point.  If our friend Jarad is lucky, we may even fry up some peppers for the potatoes.

We will see you tomorrow, and remember to dress warm.  It’s going to start off a little chilly, but we have the food goods to warm you up. (and the first people to dine with us at the market will be treated to complimentary coffee this week.  Offer good until the coffee is gone! This coffee deal is out of our appreciation for those of you who rise early and brave the cold with us to share in some taco goodness, and also to justify Chef Sam’s purchase of what was going to end up being his own personal air pot.)

Saturday Farmers’ Market Menu Of Culinary Somethings

Oh, yes!!!  It is time again for the Saturday Des Moines Downtown Farmers’ Market!  It seems like this happens quite often.  Almost weekly.  On Saturday.  So you are making your well laid plan of attack for your market trip in the morning and are wondering to yourself, “Self, I wonder what Tacopocalypse has for my/your belly tomorrow morning?”   We are glad you asked.  But we would have preferred to have the question directed towards us instead of yourself.  We will have to work on the communication breakdown…

Luckily we can read your self-addressing mind and here is your answer:

Menu for June 11, 2011

Yes, the usual hand pressed (and now improved thanks to your feedback) tortillas, Red Salsa, Tomatillo-Habanero salsa (the green one) and the usual onion, cilantro, and fresh jalapenos will be on hand.  In addition to these things we have some new stuff/items/culinary somethings…

First off we are bringing back our Breakfast Thing for its second week of future DTFM breakfast dominance.  This is not a breakfast burrito.  This is not a breakfast sandwich.  This is definitely not one of those doughnuts I have been hearing about but never have time to try, and NO, this is no papusa.  It’s just a Breakfast Thing, like a thing you eat at breakfast time as brought to you by your loyal taco chef and taste-ticular partner in dining crime, Me.

What is a BT?  It is two tortillas surrounding Chihauhau cheese then grilled and topped with your choice of meats/not meat, scrambled egg, special salsa, more cheese, and finely chopped spring garlic greens.  It is large and in charge, and you can get whatever you want on it.  You want some slaw? Done.  You want a mixture of Bacon chorizo AND vegan chorizo?  As you wish.  This is YOUR breakfast, you should have a say in what you have (which shouldn’t include cold flour tortillas, pre-cooked bacon, and packaged pre-whipped sort-of-egg product like other stands may use). So far 9 out of the 10 people who have tried it approve.  Come down and give your approval this week.  I don’t know how long this Thing will be around.

Next up is the new special taco, the BLT TACO.  The BLT Taco lays down some serious groove not unlike a young taco-shaped Bootsy Collins.  Inside the hand pressed corn tortilla you will find roasted hunks of charcoal grilled slab bacon, fresh Cleverley Farms Arugula, Roasted Tomato Compote, and a Roasted Poblano Crema tops it off.

Ok, so here it goes

  • Breakfast Thing
  • BLT taco
  • Pork Tongue
  • Braised Pork
  • Bacon Chorizo
  • Vegan Chorizo

That is your menu, I had some fun pictures and more whimsical quips but my home internet is being non-compliant to our co-opted work agreement.  We will see you tomorrow…. we WILL see you tomorrow… we WILL see YOU tomorrow… we WILL SEE YOU tomorrow…WE WILL SEE YOU

TOMORROW.

Unless you are reading this on Saturday.  The we will see you today.

Tacos Are Important,

Sam

The Taco Rapture Looms Near!

image

Yes, there is much talk from a few as-yet unreliable sources that the world will end this coming Saturday, May 21.  Whether or not this is true remains to be seen…and no one in the Tacopocalypse compound is holding their breath, because 1) We are taco powered skeptics 2) we have lots of prep to do in preparation for the Tacopocalypse 3) We would end up passing out from lack of oxygen, and possibly fall and get injured. Thats no way to run a rapture!

So, end of days or not, the tacos will still be flowing this Saturday at the Downtown Farmers Market. Look for us at 2nd &.Court Ave, on the southwest corner with our very good friends Cleverley Farms

First Farmers’ Market Re-cap Thingy!

Ok, now that it is merely 23 hours until the next Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market with extra Tacopocalypse, it is about time you heard what the citizens/staff of said Tacopocalypse had to say about the first D.M.D.T.F.M.
It was amazing.  There was little to no gameplan, but everything went off like a well executed…um…gameplan.  It turns out that the DSM citizenry (and a number of non-DSM visitors) was more than receptive to our brand of fully hand made/lovingly prepared hand-pressed corn tortilla embraced taco goodness, they responded well to our Niman Ranch meats from booth-mates Cleverley Farms and vegans were kindly (and humanely) thankful for a REAL LEGITIMATE DTFM DINING OPTION AKA TACOPOCALYPSE VEGAN CHORIZO.

Many friends were made, many smiles were smiled, and the weather may have been the most beautiful in DTFM Great Opening Day Madness had ever seen.  Nothing but positivity!

It was an amazing time, and I am thankful to have met some new friends.  And to have heard a lovely older woman reading our banner and contemplating proper pronunciation of the brand moniker.

“Tacopalypse…taco…how do you say that? Tacolips?”

Yes, my friends…we will give you TACO LIPS.  See you tomorrow at the DTFM.
